The Recording Industry Association of America, Inc. (RIAA) and its member record companies issued a DMCA takedown notice to GitHub for hosting the git repositories of the popular CLI tool “youtube-dl”, primarily because of the claimed intentional circumvention of YouTube’s ‘rolling siphers’.
As a result Github has disabled public access to the repository.
This is what we get when we centralize everything. Git is more than GitHub and also it was designed to be decentralized. GitHub is owned by Microsoft, a corporation that values benefit much more than people.
I’m even not sure if the takedown was legal as it’s not the software that does anything but it’s people’s use that may be considered illegal. Last night I was talking about this on IRC with some people and everybody were unhappy about the situation.
What we all agreed on was that we should have more decentralization and also less dependency on corporations to avoid future incidents like this.
Happily, in this case, we have a lot of copies of the software and the harm is not much but I believe there are a lot of people who depend on services and corporations like GitHub and Microsoft and Google which can do a lot of harm to them.
I always have suggested alternatives to GitHub and GitLab dot com such as Codeberg.
